SAFMH Deputy Director Encourages People To Seek Help This World Mental Health Day

SAFMH News Room

Because of the stigma attached to mental health, we are not yet seeing people coming out and comfortably talking about their own mental health and also the mental health of family members, children, colleagues and those kind of things. – Leon de Beer, SAFMH Deputy Director

The SA Federation for Mental Health’s Deputy Director, Leon de Beer, spoke with Ayanda Nyathi on Newzroom Afrika to commemorate World Mental Health Day and highlighted some of the pressing issues facing mental health in South Africa.

Our mental health is really under pressure. Mental health experts consistently agree that despite the fact that we have policies – and we do have a new Mental Health Policy Framework that was launched this year – there is a real problem when it comes to the lack of implementation, human resources shortages and poor resourcing and these all pose significant challenges to realising the vision we have for mental health in South Africa. – Leon de Beer, SAFMH Deputy Director
