SAFMH Youth Forum Engages With Youth Mental Health Champions in Brazil

SAFMH News Room

Last month, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Global Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the Child Mind Institute hosted a youth forum with 31 incredible mental health advocates ages 14 to 24, from the SA Federation For Mental Health (SAFMH) and the Young Peacebuilders (Jovens Líderes Pela Paz), Brazil.

For me I felt so honoured to be part of a dialogue with people from Brazil and delighted at how interested they were in South Africa’s affairs creating an enageful dialogue. I was also enlightened about the state of mental health and the school conditions in Brazil.  In addition to that, I was impressed at the Peacebuilders` initiative and activities that have developed creative methods that contribute to mental-well being of learners. Also very proud of the young people who are involved in the project. At the age of 18 I was definitely not thinking about being involved in something as big as the CMI or being something like a peace builder. Shoutout to them for starting their journey to contributing to taking care of other`s mental health at such a young age.  – Masego Matane, SAFMH National Youth Forum Member
