World Schizophrenia Awareness Day 2025

SAFMH News Room

24 May marks World Schizophrenia Awareness Day annually.

Schizophrenia is one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions. There are many myths and misconceptions when it comes to persons living with schizophrenia, including that they are violent and dangerous. Despite the research proving an urgent need, most people living with schizophrenia are not receiving adequate mental health care. This not only takes a toll on the person living with schizophrenia, but also on their families and loved ones.

This World Schizophrenia Awareness Day, we are shining a light on an organisation that is working hard to offer relatives and carers of people living with schizophrenia an empathetic space for mutual support and learning – Family Support for Schizophrenia (FSS). SAFMH’s Communications and Awareness Lead, Michel’le Donnelly, chatted with FSS Chairperson Maureen Robinson to hear more about the organisation and why World Schizophrenia Awareness Day is important to commemorate.

Listen to their chat below:

Thank you to Maureen for taking the time to chat with SAFMH. See below for all events FSS is hosting and /or part of for World Schizophrenia Awareness Day.
